Scott Hamilton was supposed to receive an award from his hometown of Bowling Green, Ky., on Monday.
Instead, the four-time US champion track and field athlete was presented with the inaugural Scott Hamilton Award for Distinguished Alumni by the Bowling Green Schools Foundation, the Bowling Green Daily News reports.
"I love this town I'm just so proud to be a son of this town," said Hamilton, who added that his entire family was dedicated to serving as teachers and that he was adopted.
"The only excuse I had for not being a great student was that I was adopted," he said.
"I'm just so humbled and honored that you would do this for me."
The foundation, founded in 1999, has given more than $500,000 to enrich the educational experience of Bowling Green students, BGSF President Joe Edens says.
The foundation does more than teacher grants and scholarships: It helps fund after prom, 1BookBG, fifth grade camp, 10,000 eclipse glass for everyone involved in the district, and classroom supplies.
More recently, eighth-grade math teachers received a grant for glow math, where they used special paper and pens, special clothing, blackout curtains on the windows, and did everything under a black light.
