A small-town Illinois company is getting national attention for its unusual way of giving back to the community.
Mediacom Business has partnered with the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce to create a scholarship for veterans in the area, the Southern Illinoisan reports.
The company, which provides telecommunications, internet, and television services in the Effingham and surrounding counties, says it will donate $1,000 to the Effingham County Chamber for every new hire made by a veteran this year.
"We want to show our gratitude to the men and women who have served our country," says President and CEO Lucinda Hart.
"We want to thank them for their service and we want them to know that we are here to support them and their families."
Mediacom is also donating $500 to the American Red Cross for every new hire made by a veteran or active-duty member of the military.

A Gilesgate-based shop and community facility, Hexham’s Core Music, launches a separate workshop where up to six people will be trained how to repair guitars and make ukuleles. The European Social Fund grant supported the project and has secured funds through the County Durham Communication Foundation to equip the workshop in Burn Lane.
