When Don Lynskey's nephew died unexpectedly last year, the New York man decided to honor his memory by starting a scholarship fund in his nephew's name, the Syracuse Post-Standard reports.

"Offering scholarships is a wonderful way to commemorate someone, but there's a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into creating and maintaining a scholarship fund," Lynskey says.

"I had been trying to administer our program myself, creating the forms and applications, distributing them, getting them to different schools, getting the money to the recipients, ensuring it was going to the institutions, those types of tasks."

Now that he's partnered with the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, "they take care of all of that for us," Lynskey says.

The scholarship fund, called the Connor Arthur Lynskey Memorial Scholarship Fund, is open to high school seniors in Herkimer and Oneida counties who plan to attend a four-year college or university.

The Lynskey family has awarded more than $315,000 in scholarships since they started the fund in the wake of Connor's death.

Lynskey tells the Post-Standard that the fund is open to any student studying any field of study, from accounting to veterinary sciences.
